It was a little difficult to potty train Katelyn, and she certainly gave us a challenge. We tried giving rewards, leaving her without any pants… you name it! Maybe we were just being too impatient, but we were ready to give up!

After trying almost every method we could think of to no avail, Super Daddy — the “Psychologist” that he is (well, a Psych major and Psych nurse… he’s no Psychologist per se) — decided he was going to do one last “psychological” thing before we threw in the towel completely.

He kicked everybody out of the house! We needed some consistency with her training. Tatang and Inang were sent on a much-needed 2-week vacation in Missouri City. Mommy was sent to her 14-hour work shifts at the Pharmacy. That left the house with just Katelyn, Daddy, the potty… and a secret weapon (well, weapons, really)!

Luckily for us, Katelyn has a best friend “Amy” – a stuffed brown rabbit bought by Mommy in the mall (this was before she had Elmo, Pinky the Pig, White Lamb, and her other list of “friends”). Because Katelyn was resistant, the trick was to potty train Amy instead of Katelyn. Then reward Amy for her good work. I told you it was tricky!

Daddy invited Katelyn and Amy to a snack party. Everything was setup with a table for three. We had tea sets at home that Mommy lent us for this project. We drank orange juice and water for our fun “party” for Katelyn, Daddy, and Amy. Then at certain intervals, I would take Amy to the potty. I would then give her the best hug and praises I could give for “using” the potty, and afterwards, take her to a canister on the table with chocolate wafers. The cycle would then start over.

Katelyn was very excited to have a party with Daddy and Amy. She was grinning and clapping a lot. After a while, it reached a point where she would bring Amy to the potty herself and attempt to reward Amy with the wafers (I had to intervene on that part of course, because Amy couldn’t really eat). Katelyn wouldn’t even wait for my prompting anymore. My heart was beating fast. This might actually work!

This went on and on, until she finally decided it was also her turn to use the potty and get the much-wanted attention from Daddy that he was giving to Amy every time Amy used the potty.

Alas, we hit success! Yippey!!!

I can’t even describe to you the elation I felt! Let’s just say I looked like a fool if somebody were to peep inside the window. Let’s just say I did a victory dance… and more…

I then called Jenn immediately with the good news!

Katelyn Sings “This Little Light of Mine”

Thank you so much to all the Lolos and Lolas (Grandpas and Grandmas) during our visit to California who gave Katelyn money! I used it to buy her first karaoke machine to begin training her to sing in church. I’m so proud of her progress! She gets very excited to turn on that microphone every day and sing. Her shyness is slowly being overshadowed by her enthusiasm for music.

For all those who see her at church every Sabbath, you won’t believe your ears. Get ready to be surprised.

Katelyn Sings the “B-I-B-L-E” Song

This is one of Katelyn’s favorite songs. She just loves shouting out those letters! I usually accompany her on the piano. But one time, while I was sitting on the floor with her, she walked to the piano with the mic in her left hand and began pressing random piano keys with her right hand as she sang her heart out. Guess she didn’t need me to play that time!

This one is my absolute favorite. I’ve listened to this a hundred times and I laugh every time. She sings this particular hymn constantly – in bed, while playing, at the mall, in the car. Everywhere but at church where she morphs into a silent flower.

She’s Daddy’s Little Girl

I remember times in the past when Jennye would apologize for Katelyn being a girl. I guess she assumed that since she was not a boy, I would love her less. Not true at all. Katelyn is the love of my life (besides her mommy, of course!). I wouldn’t have it otherwise. She’s so precious, and when I’m on the road driving, I always find myself thanking God for giving us Katelyn Rose.

She’s definitely Daddy’s little girl. When she cries, she wants to go to Daddy. When she’s scared of everybody else, she wants to go to Daddy. When she’s trying to sleep, she wants to fall asleep in Daddy’s hands.

One thing I think is endearing is that when we’re lying together in bed, she rests her head on my chest and just stays there. Makes me feel so loved. I can tell she really adores me. I adore her too!

So, do I wish my first child should have been a boy? Not a chance. Katelyn Rose is irreplaceable!

We always remind Katelyn to pray before she eats. We’ve had limited success. She clasps her hands together, but we can’t get her to close her eyes. In fact, usually she clasps her hands and grins like crazy, her dimples burrowing in her checks. It’s extremely adorable, but obviously not praying. Well, she’s had a tiny bit of improvement. She kinda closes her eyes now. Kinda. We’re still working on it!

Tatang was trying to get Katelyn, but she wanted to stay with me. I don’t know how old Katelyn was at this point, probably a little more than a year.

I took the opportunity to “tease” her as I rolled the camera. I put her on the other side of the room to see what she’d do.
